Conserving Land
As a country develops, the demand for land to build houses, industires and other facilities will naturally increase.Developments benefits the people the countries forest and other nature areas should be protected.Governments need to make plans for conserving land.
Conserving lands means to be careful use of land resources to ensure that damage is kept to a minimum. One way of conserving land is to set aside land a nature reserves. carefully managed to protect its wildlife, plants and other natural features and to provide special oppurtunities for study or research.
In Singapore,5% of the total land area is set aside as nature reserves.some 126 sepcies of birds that can only be found in Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a area it is protected for its natural heritage.
Why must we conserve land?
Land supports life.Land that is undeveloped keeps air and water clean for living things. That land, with its grasses and forests and rocky hillsides, filters toxins, pollution, and foreign matter from those elements necessary for life.
Land supports livelihoods. In particular, the scenic beauty of the Thousand Islands attracts people who want to live here, and to visit here. Those people build houses, buy good & services, rent hotel rooms and generally support the economy of the region.
Land supports wildlife. Many species are experiencing a loss of habitat because of increased development or changes in agricultural practices. Conserving land in its natural state protects wildlife habitats and species populations.
Land provides recreation. The modern world is full of stresses and demands on our time. We have to carve out opportunities to be with family, to have fun and to achieve balance in our daily lives. The recreational opportunities provided by a natural landscape – hiking and biking, swimming and kayaking – are essential to a healthy lifestyle.

Maximising Agriculture Landuse
Agriculture Landuse
Besides maximising urban landuse, countires also need to look for land to grow more food crops to feed their increasing population.
There are 3 ways to maximise agriculture landuse.
Irrigation,Terracing and soil-less farming.
Irrigation or the watering of crops throught artificial means to allow farmers to grow crops in areas that exprience water shortage and to ensure that the crops receive just the right amount of water.
water can come from irrigation pipes from various water sources such as river or lake where water is scarce.
Terracing
In countires such as japan, where flat are arable land limited, hilly areas are used for the cultivation of crops.Hilly areas are unsuitable for farming because steeps slopes cause water to run off very quickly. and water is ratained by the soil. This makes the plants not have enough water to nutrients to grow well.
Its is also difficult for machinery on steep slopes.
Terracing invlove creating flats strips of land by cutting a series of steps into hill slopes. This increases the supply of arable land as flat land is more favourable for cultivation to be carried.
Soil-less Farming.
Beside using irrgation and terracing, farmers can maximise land for agriculture by crops without soil. This enables to crops to be grown closer together.thus maxmising landuse for agrucilture purposes. This method is is known as soil-less farming.
plants grow by soil-less farming method can be grown closer together.
Soil-less farming is found to be effective in increasing output of crops. This is because sufficient amount of nutrients can be delivered and disrtibuted evenly to crops at regular intervals.

Introduction to Maximising Landuse
Maximising use land is to maximised as land could not be use previously can now be used to build houses or agricultural purposes.
Beside reclaiming more land, countries also try to make full use of existing land.
Maximising urban landuse, usually result landuse planning. Landuse planning is the process by which different areas on a piece of land are assigned for different landuse. traditionally, cities were planned based on zones. each of these zones have a specific function : industrial, commercial, housing or leisure.
In order to allow land to meetv the need of more user, countries are starting to develop mixed landuse projects. In mixed landuse project, there is a combination of shopping malls, office, houses and hotels in one area. The various landuses are usually closely packed in a small area and linked by pedestrian walkway and escalators.
Mixed landuse project are being developed on a small scale in many cities such as London and Singapore, usually on areas of a few hectares. The largest mixed landuse development in Singapore is the Suntec City area where offices, shops, hotels are within walking distances of one another.
High Density
Technology advances have enabled taller buildings to be constructed in areas where land is scarce but in high demand. These areas are described as high density areas bacause there are many people working or living per unit area.In Singapore the Housing Developement Board(HDB) plans to build flats will be located in more established housing estate such as Bishan and Toa Payoh or in close to the city centres such as Tanjong Pagar.
More people can work or be housed on small piece of land. This frees up scarce land for other landuses.High density buildings help to reduce the rate at which the country's remaining green spaces are developed.
